Sketch out a plan of your proposed / excavated pond write down the maximum length, the widest width and deepest depth of the pond. For example, if your pond is has a maximum length of 5 metres and a maximum width of 4 metres and a maximum pond depth of 1 metre.

How to calculate the pond liner size

Liner length = max length + (2 x max depth) + 1 (for overlap)
Liner width = max width + (2 x max depth) + 1 (for overlap)

So for the example above

Pond liner length = 5+2+1 = 8 metres
Pond liner width = 4+2+1 = 7 metres

You'd need a pond liner that is 8 metres x 7 metres

Pond Measuring Tips

We suggest it is usually better to order pond lining material only after you have completed excavating the pond just in case you decide to either change the shape or run into problems during the dig i.e. sewage pipes, electric cable, high water table etc

If you are planning a formal pond i.e. paving slabs or similar around edge, then such a big overlap around the edge is not required.

To double check your measurements and possibly save material / costs use a flexible measuring tape to measure as follows;

Begin the tape 60cm from the outer edge of the pond take it over the edge into the pond, along the base (follow the contours),up the other side and terminate 60cm away from the edge of the pond. Measuring the longest length and widest width will give you and exact material requirement.
